Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
