Senate Approves Measure to Release Jeffrey Epstein Records

The Senate on Tuesday gave swift approval to a bill that will mandate the disclosure of investigative files associated with the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a change of position by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The administration relented after an extended period of trying to block the cross-party initiative involving a case that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.

Swift Approval in Congress

Senators proceeded by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a individual voting process, accelerating the process. Just before, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

“The American people have waited long enough. The survivors have waited patiently,” Chuck Schumer stated in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Uncover the facts. Ensure full disclosure.”

Future Action

The measure next goes to Donald Trump for his endorsement. He indicated on Monday that he would approve the bill.

Even though the president has for months dismissed the outcry over the authorities' approach of the investigation as a “Democrat hoax”, he signalled his support for the House bill over the weekend, and announced he would give his assent if it comes to him.

Support and Opposition

The Democratic party, along with those affected and their supporters who were present in a House gallery, applauded after the bill was enacted. The only opposition came from Clay Higgins, who stated he was concerned the measure would reveal personal information of witnesses, those under scrutiny and others caught up in the investigation.
