Top Selection

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring satire addresses the tyranny of female beauty as well as the feared consequences of ageing. Demi Moore presents a brilliant portrayal as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress demoted to starring in a workout series on television. Edged out due to her slimy boss Harvey, she seeks out a secretive and terrifying procedure titled the Substance. This produces a younger clone named Sue, culminating in a progressively parasitic dynamic between the two. October 17th, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This suspenseful mystery includes the talented actress playing Laura, a top-notch writer who decides to take a hiatus from reporting on international wars to embark on a luxury cruise alongside a terminally ill Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her partner, as well as other affluent individuals. However when an unknown lady falls into the sea one night and everyone insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts take over. Available now, Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills with this innovative ghostly tale filmed completely through the eyes of the phantom. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the camera – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of sensing the poltergeist, and it looks like defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, with a twist that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage embraces his unique fame via this autobiographical spoof. He plays an egotistical Hollywood actor playing himself who accepts a million-dollar gig to visit a celebration in Mallorca for billionaire Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by the CIA to spy on the suspected cartel boss, his unique performing skills is put to the test. This Saturday, 9pm, on Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

The director's claustrophobic thriller holds up well despite the lack of a continuation. Set in 1978 Denver, several child abductions has rendered the youth on edge. Once Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and held captive in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line on the wall keeps ringing, with spooky callers offering help, as the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister could save him. An effective horror. October 11th, late evening, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the conflict between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for Mammon in this director's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation regarding the shamed TV preacher and her criminal husband. Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple set about capitalizing on the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, bad makeup and hypocrisy, though the lead actress succeeds to show the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, late night, on Film4

Black Bag

This week's additional entry by the same director delivers a spy mystery as precise as the polo necks worn by Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is to discover a traitor among the team out of five possibilities – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are experts of deadpan cool, so a delicious mental battle of deception or honesty takes place. Additional actors join in the clever spy entertainment. This Friday, various showings, Sky Cinema
