EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
