The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
